Iron has been used for over a thousand years as a decorative feature of buildings. From its original use in the construction of churches and monasteries, the style of decorative ironwork has evolved from 12th century Gothic, 16th century Renaissance, 17th century Baroque and Rococo with its ornamental gates and balconies, to early 20th century Art Nouveau and Modern. During this period different techniques have been created by the blacksmith in working iron, but the traditional elements remain the forge, the hammer, the anvil and the skill of the blacksmith. At G W Day & Co. we carry on this tradition. Established in 1950 at East Chiltington Forge by the late Gaius William Day, we produce Quality custom made Ironwork covering the whole range from gates, balustrades, staircases, grilles, garden furniture, rose arches, rose arbours, weathervanes, chandeliers and candlesticks to firebaskets, fire canopies, fireirons and curtain poles.

Architectural ironmongery and the repair and restoration of ironwork is also a feature of our work. Sites at which we have undertaken work include Bodium Castle, Battle Abbey and Arundel Castle.
